The four fundamental concepts in nursing’s metaparadigm are nursing, person, environment, and health (CCN, 2014). Each of these fundamental concepts must be addressed, explained, and applied to nursing practice in order for a comprehensive nursing theory to accurately reflect the nursing profession. Ultimately, a nursing theory provides a window into the reality of the profession of nursing.
Nursing’s metaparadigm is very significant to the practice and philosophy of nursing. It guides nurses to examine their own practice from a theoretical perspective, allowing them to reflect on the meaning of being a member of the professional discipline of nursing (Lee & Fawcett, 2013). In being able to reflect on one’s own practice, this allows each individual to continuously develop professionally by embracing change and learning to grow as a nurse. I remember my first job as a nurse consisted mostly of clinically-based practice, but now that I have completed my BSN and have transitioned into the MSN program I have found that I am focusing more on nursing from a theoretical perspective.
