Question
The activity focuses on some of the factors that determine population growth in a particular area, how fertility rates have declined in many areas, and variables that encourage large families in some areas but bring birth rates down in others. Chapter 7 discusses demographic transition, explaining how improved living conditions and economic development can bring down population growth rates. Brazil is highlighted in the opening case study, but Bangkok is another example of recent demographic transition. Bangkok is one of the world’s most rapidly growing cities, with a population expanding in response to growing economic prosperity and migration from impoverished rural farming regions. Review the Case Study at the beginning of the chapter, entitled “Population Stabilization in Brazil,” as well as Section 7.3, entitled “Many Factors Determine Population Growth” and Section 7.4, entitled “A Demographic Transition Can Lead to Stable Population Size.” Consider the key factors for social transitions and population growth and stabilization put forth in the reading, and apply them to consideration of Bangkok for the below question: Search in Google Earth for Bangkok, Thailand, and zoom in to examine and explore the area carefully. Also go to http://google.com/maps, enter 13.759858,100.623657 and search and then drag the street-view person icon to the place mark. According to Chapter 7, Section 4, what has been the actual result of population control in Thailand, and what factors contributed to this result?
Explanation / Answer
When we google search the given location, we find there are high quality roads, parks, stadiums and natural vegetation. Overall that is what an ideal developed city should be like. All these have been possible only because of reduction in population growth.
Population control is not very uphill task and Thailand government has proved it. Even if there is low literacy in some areas, the reach of medical literacy has been appreciable. In this commendable target achieving process, family planning has contributed to this result. Use of contraceptives among married couples has increased from 15 to 70 percent which was like a revolution, and in 15 years Thailand’s population growth rate has been cut in half, from 3.2 percent to 1.6 percent. There is no surprise why the city of Bankok is so much developed.
