Question

The European Space Agency launched a probe called Rosetta in March, 2004. In August 2014, Rosetta reached its destination: a comet called 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (we'll call it Comet 67P for short!). Rosetta is the first spacecraft to rendezvous with a comet, and plans to orbit the comet for 17 months. It launched a lander craft, called Philae, which landed on Comet 67P on November 12, 2014. Approach this problem as if you were the engineers consulting on the project back in March 2004. The Rosetta has a launch mass on Earth of 2, 900 kilograms and the Philae has a launch mass of 220 pounds-mass. In order to escape Earth's gravity, the combined spacecraft must accelerate at a rate of 25,000 miles per hour squared [mi/h^2]. How much thrust, in units of newtons, must the engines provide? If the Philae was deployed to Mars instead of Comet 67P, what would the weight of the lander be after landing on the Martian surface, in units of pound-force? The gravity of Mars is 3.71 meters per second squared [m/s^2]. The Philae has several scientific instruments onboard, used to study the comet. ALICE is an ultraviolet imaging spectrograph, used to search for noble gasses in the comet core. The MIRO measured microwave emissions in attempt to measure substances like water, ammonia, or carbon dioxide. MIDAS is a dust analysis instrument, which will collect dust particles from the comet. Complete the table on the following page about these instruments. The gravity of Comet 67P is estimated at 1 millimeters per second squared [mm/s^2]. Due to the low gravity of the comet, the lander will "harpoon itself to the surface".

Explanation / Answer

1) Thrust = Ma

= (2900+ 0.4536×220)×25000×1609/(3600^2)

= 9311 N

2) F = 220×3.71/9.8

= 83.3 N

3) Table is not given for third question. So I think you wanted to ask only two questions
