Air pollution has become very costly environmental problem in terms of both human lives and in terms of billions of dollars lost for health-care expenditure and crop damage.

Contact the pollution control authorities in your community for the levels or air pollutants. Identify main air pollutants and the possible causes of air pollution. How does your community compare to others? Discuss your findings.

Consider your own skills and interests. Think of at least two skills or interests that could be applied (if you had the time and resources) to helping improve air quality in your community.

Your answer should be between 700–900 words long and should include introduction and conclusion section.

Explanation / Answer

Air pollution increasing at Global level due to industrialisation, motor vehicles smoke, gases produced by various activities, thermal power plants ashes and mining dust. The air pollution is two types. Indoor air pollution and outdoor air pollution. Natural air pollution also occurs due to Volcanoes, hot springs and Conifer forests. But their effect is much smaller than man made air pollutions. Because of air pollution ozone layer decreasing causing lot of environmental problem. Air pollution increasing the atmosphere heat resulting in melting of Polar ice caps and raising the sea level.

The main air pollutants are two types primary and secondary. Pollutants emanating from industry categorised as Primary air pollutants. Sulphur dioxide emitted from factories is an example for Primary air pollutants

Secondary air pollutants resulted by reaction of primary pollutants with local conditions. Formation of Smog created interaction of primary pollutants with humidity is an example of secondary pollutants

There are many reasons for air pollution mainly related to human activity. Main causes of air pollution are listed below

1.      Due to burning of fossil fuels like petrol, coal etc. and other combustibles of factories causing main air pollution. Sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides are some of the air pollutants causing major air pollution.

2.      Fertilizers used in agriculture contains Ammonia is a hazardous gas in atmosphere. Even the pesticides and insectisides used in agriculture rapids polluting air quality

3.      Industries release carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, organic compounds, chemicals in to the air causing air pollution.

4.      Mining operations to use large equipment’s as well as their vehcle movement and excavations of minerals release lot of dust in to atmosphere causing air pollution.

5.      In our houses painting of walls, house cleaning products, old carpets etc. produce indoor air pollution.

All most all communities facing same problem of air pollution. But we have developed lot of greenery in our environment helping to cool temperature and giving fresh air and lot of oxygen. People are feeling happy, healthy and giving relaxation when we enter our community from the work. Now nearby communities also increasing greenery in their area

The two skills suggested for improving the air quality in our community are as follows:

1. Declaration of no smoking area in our community helping in reducing air pollution. Now most of the people stopped smoking by realising its effects on their children,family and community and their good effects due to stopping of smoking.

2. In our community we encouraged to grow plants in each house. So it is refreshing air in their house as well as surrounding area. We are growing plants which produce more oxygen and good for health.

The conclusion of this study is that air pollution is a very hazardous activity which can consume not only our life but also coming generations lives. Air pollution can be reduced by planting trees in houses and forests, increasing forest area, controlling pollution from industries, mining and agriculture activities. We have to adopt these air pollution controlling methods to make our life better and give good life to next generations.
