Question
1. A. Define the theory of plate tectonics and differentiate it from continental drift.
B. List AND describe four pieces of evidence that support the theory of plate tectonics.
2. Describe the scientific method and define the words ‘hypothesis’ and ‘theory’ within this method. Information on the scientific method is found on the Home Page of this course.
3. A. List and describe the three main lithospheric boundary types.
B. For each of the three lithospheric boundary types, describe the topography and tectonic events associate with that boundary.
Explanation / Answer
1)a) theory of plate tectonics : this theory suggest that the outer rigid layer of earths crust is divided into several plates which are moving across the earths surface relative to each other
examples of tectonic plates are eurasian plates etc
the differenc between the theory of tectonic plates and continental drift is that plate tectonics is the theory which explains the structure, composition and internal processes of the Earth whereas continental drift refers to the theory that the continents all used to be connected in one megacontinent called as pangaea
b)the four evidences for support of theory of plate tectonics are
1)The shape of the sea floor
2)Thickness of sediments also increases away from ridge
3)Distribution of earthquakes along plate margins
4)location of earth quake focus along subduction zones which are dipping
