Question

The -season monsoon is similar to a large-scale sea breeze while the -season monsoon is similar to a large-scale land breeze. (Think about the difference in onshore versus offshore wind flow during the Asian summer and winter seasons.) Which of the following is associated with the Southern Oscillation? Choose all that apply. Responsible for formation of El Nino Occurs in the Atlantic Ocean Reversal in characteristics (such as pressure) followed by a return to normal conditions Normal conditions are low pressure in the West Pacific and high pressure in the East Pacific Reverse conditions cause warm water to be moved away from coast, replaced by cooler, nutrient rich water; this is known as El Nino is a fluid's resistance to flow. Cold honey has a very high, and water has low. The same word can be used to fill in all blanks.)

Explanation / Answer

7.Summer season monsoon is similar to large scale sea breeze, winter season summer monsoon is similar to large scale land breeze.

Land and sea breeze:

Land breeze and sea breezes are the diurnal local winds occuring on coasts due to difference in surface temperature of land and sea. During daytime mainly in summer, land is heated more than the adjacent body of water. As a result, warmed air over the land expands producing an area of low pressure which in turn results in cooler air tends starts moving acoss the coast line from sea to land known as sea breeze. However at night, due to nocturnal radiation, land is colder than the adjacent sea and the pressure gradient is directed from land to sea. These offhsore winds known as land breeze.

Monsoon:

During winter the huge landmass of Asia cools more rapidly than the surrounding oceans with the result that a strong high pressure centre develops over the continent. On the other hand, the pressure over adjacent oceans is relatively lower. As a consequence the pressure gradient is directed from land to sea. Since the outflow of air is from continental landmass toward oceans which brings cold dry air towards the low latitudes.

In summer the temperature and pressure conditions are reversed. Now the huge landmass of Asia heats more quickly and develops a strong low pressure centre. SInce the pressure over the adjacent oceans being high, a sea to land pressure gradient is established. The surface air flow is therefore from the highs over the oceans towards the lows over the heated landed. This air is full of water vapour and causes heavy precipitation.

So both of these phenomenon i.e monsoon and breezes derive solely from the contrast in temperature which is more aggravated in case of monsoon because of the longer duration of the period.

8. Southern oscillation is the naturally occuring phenomenon that involve irregularly periodic vaariation in wind and sea surface temperatures in equatorial pacific. Warming phase of the ENSO which involves warmer SST then normal SST(sea surface temperature) over central and eastern eqautorial Pacific known as El NINo where as cooling phase involves cooler than normal SST known as La Nina.

- responsible for formation of El Nino

- reversal in characteristics followed by return to normal conditions

- normal conditions are low pressure in the west pacific and high pressure in the east pacific

9. Viscosity is a fluid's resistance to flow. Cold honey has a very high viscosity and water has low visocosity
