Question
Some sources estimate that sea level may rise several inches over the next 100 years due to melting of the polar ice caps. Discuss the implications for different parts of the US (see location assignments below). Consider the industries (manufacturing, agriculture, chemical processing, fisheries, construction, service, tourism, etc) that dominate the region. Consider the Us gulf coast. How will they be affected? Other than sea level rise itself, what other hazards might the area you are assigned experience more frequently than now? How might the area prepare to prevent losses due to sea level rise? Your answer should be a short essay about 300-400 words.
Explanation / Answer
Some of the fastest rates at which sea level is rising in the United States is in the areas where the land is sinking , including parts of the Gulf Coast. For example, coastal Louisiana has its relative sea level rise by eight inches in the last 50 years.ubsiding land in the Chesapeake Bay area is also one of the location which can see the effects of relative sea level rise, increasing the risk of flooding in cities and tidal wetlands.Population is increasing along coast and development increase the chances of disturbance of coastal ecosystems to sea level rise.
Development will alter the amount of sediment delivered to coastal areas, degrade erosion, and damage wetlands. For example, coastal Louisiana lost 1,900 square miles of wetlands in recent decades due to human alterations of the Mississippi River's sediment system and oil and water extraction that has made thar land to sink due to which wetlands do not receive sediment to keep the level in line with rising seas and do not function as buffers which are natural to flooding. sea levels can also increase the salt concentration of ground water and push salt water further upstream. This salinitywill makethis water undrinkable without desalination, and harms aquatic plants and animals that cannot tolerate increased salinity. In the mid-Atlantic region, sea level rise is making estuaries more salty, threatening aquatic plants and animals that are sensitive to salinity.
Tourism also will be affected as the high sea rise will make tourist places see decline in tourist .Fisheries sector will see decline due to high salinity in water that will affect fishes.
The area should prepare first by contributing less to sea rise by emitting less C02 by controlling CO2 emitting factories making them ecofriendly then by preventing more colonisation near coastal areas and also not allowing industries there.
