Question

You have a limestone that contains calcite (CaCO_3) bivalve shells that have been cemented together by calcite. You also have a quartz (SiO_2)-rich siltstone that contains intact fish skeletons (bones composed of apatite - Ca5(PO_4)_3(OH)). You are interested in obtaining in situ images of both using X-ray Computed Tomography (CT), but you only have sufficient funds to image one. Which is the most effective use of your money the fossiliferous limestone or the fossiliferous siltstone? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

x-ray os sandstone will be better because the skeleton composition and the sandstone composition are different so there is a sharp contrast at the boundary. therefor it will produce a clearer image.
