.dIl 89%. 10:16 AM x Question Include units and the appropriate number of sig figs. Show all of your work A 440 turn solenoid measures 36 cm long and 4.0 cm in diameter. It is connected to a power supply whose current is decreased until the magnetic field inside of the solenoid goes from 15 mT to zero. This process takes 2.0 seconds. (000 ii a. What is the magnetic flux through the solenoid at the beginning of the 2.0-second interval? (4) b. What is the magnetic flux through the solenoid at the end of the 2.0-second interval? (4) c. The induced magnetic field is directed: (2) i. From left to right ii. From right to left d. What is the magnitude of the emf induced in this solenoid? (4) i. 0 V ii. 1.5 mV ii. 4.1 mVv iv. 8.3 mV Page 7 IYC 252-Spring 2018

Explanation / Answer

(A) L = u0 N^2 A / l

L = (4pi x 10^-7)(440^2) (pi 0.02^2) / (0.36)

L = 8.49 x 10^-4 H

B = u0 n I

(15 x 10^-3) = (4pi x 10^-7)(440/0.36)(I)

I = 9.77 A

flux = L I = 8.29 x 10^-3 Wb

(B) flux = 0

(C) magnetic is decreasing so induced field will be in same dirction.

Ans: (ii) right to left

(D) emf = delta(flux) / t

= (8.29x 10^-3) / 2

= 4.1 x 10^-3 Volt OR 4.1 mV

Ans(iii)
