Question

A caterpillar is viewed through a magnifying glass. It has a focal length of 10 cm and image of the bug is at infinity. Assume a normal eye with a near point of 25 cm. What is the angular magnification and how far is the caterpillar from the magnifying glass, do?

2. Unpolarized light of of intensity Io is shined on 2 polarizer. The first is on a vertical transmission axis. The second is at angle theta in respect to the first polarizer. What is angle theta, if light intensity after second polarizer is 25% of the initial intensity?

3. Two small light bulbs, 589 nm, are close to each other and 17m from a person at the back of a theater. Diffraction is the only limiting factor. How far apart are the bulbs if they are resolved by an eye with a 1.6 mm diameter pupil?

Explanation / Answer

a) F = 10 cm

S' = -25 cm

1/S + 1/S' = 1/F

1/S -1/25 = 1/10

S = 7.14 cm

2) I1 = Io/2

I2 = I1*costheta^2 = Io/2*costheta^2

0.25Io = Io/2*costheta^2

0.5 = costheta^2
theta = 45

y/r = 1.22*L/D

y/17 = (1.22*589*10^-9)/(1.6*10^-3)

y = 7.63e?3 m = 7.63 mm
