Question
You are standing on a sheet of ice that covers the football stadium parking lot in Buffalo; there is negligible friction between your feet and the ice. A friend throws you a 0.430kg ball that is traveling horizontally at 8.50m/s . Your mass is 63.0kg
Part A
If you catch the ball, with what speed do you and the ball move afterwards? answer in cm/s
Part B
If the ball hits you and bounces off your chest, so that afterwards it is moving horizontally at 8.05m/s in the opposite direction, what is your speed after the collision? answer in cm/s

Explanation / Answer
Kinetic energy of ball thrown = 1/2 mv^2
=1/2 (.43 kg)(8.50 m/s)^2 = 15.53 Newtons force
Kinetic energy after ball returns =
= 1/2(.43 kg) (8.05 m/s)^2 = 13.93 Newtons
15.53N - 13.93 N = 1.6 N of force imparted to 63kg person
F= ma
1.6 N = 63 kg ( a)
acceleration= .0254 meters/ sec^2
