Question

A 11.1 ?F capacitor and a 16.1 ?F capacitor are connected in parallel across the terminals of a 6.0 V battery.

(a) What is the equivalent capacitance of this combination?
_____________?F

(b) What is the potential difference across each capacitor?
___________V (11.1 ?F capacitor)
___________V (16.1 ?F capacitor)

(c) Find the charge on each capacitor.
______________?C (11.1 ?F capacitor)
______________?C (16.1 ?F capacitor)

(d) Find the energy stored in each capacitor.
__________ ?J (11.1 ?F capacitor)
__________?J (16.1 ?F capacitor)

Explanation / Answer

When two capacitors are in parallel then i.e 11.1 and 16.1 then total equivalent capaacitance is given by

                                              ( 11.1+16.1) uF=27.2uF

The potential difference across the capacitors will be the same when the when they are connected in parallel

then 11.1uF =6V

          16.1uF =6V

The charge on each capacitor is Q11.1 =CV =(11.1uF)(6V) =66.6uC

                                                    Q16.1 =CV =(16.1uF)(6V) =96.6uC

The energy stored in each capacitor is

                                                 U11.1 =(1/2)CV^2 =199.8uJ

                                                 u16.1 =(1/2)CV^2 =289.8uJ
