Question
A) A battery provides a voltage of 9.00V and has unknown internal resistance Rint. When the battery is connected across a resistor of resistance R1 = 8.00? , the current in the circuit is I1 = 1.00A . (Figure 1)
If the external resistance is then changed to R2 = 6.00? , what is the value of the current I2 in the circuit?
In (Figure 1) , the total resistance is 17.0k? , and the battery's emf is 24.0V . The time constant is measured to be 20.0?s .
Calculate the total capacitance of the circuit.
Calculate the time it takes for the voltage across the resistor to reach 17.0V after the switch is closed.
Explanation / Answer
From 1st statement we get
1=9/(8+Rin)
So
Rin=1 ohms
So for R2=6 ohms we get
I2=9/(6+1)=1.286A
Now Figure 1:
R=17000 ohms
T=RC=20*10^-6
So
C=T/R=1.1765nF
V=24(1-e^(-t/T))
So
For V=17 we get
t=2.46*10^-5 seconds
