A. Find the direction and magnitude of the net electrostatic force exerted on the point charge
B. Find theta- Express your answer using three significant figures.
Find the direction and magnitude of the net electrostatic force exerted on the point charge q2 in the figure.(Figure 1) Let q=+2.6?C and d=37cm. Express your answer using two significant figures. (unit of mesaure is in N) Find theta- Express your answer using three significant figures. Units for answer should be in: degrees counterclockwise from q2-q3 directionExplanation / Answer
Electric field at q2 due to :
q1 = kq/d*d (up)
q3 = -3kq/d*d (right)
q4 = -4kq/sqrt(2d)*sqrt(2d) = -2kq/d*d (Along q2-q4)
q4 can be resolved as, -2*sqrt(2)*kq/d*d along right and down respectively.
So, net (right) = -5.828kq/d*d ... (x component)
net (up) = -1.828kq/d*d (y component)
E total = sqrt(x^2 + y^2) = 1.043*10^6 N/C
Angle = tan^-1(up/right) = 17.4 degree (clockwise from q2-q3, because tan inverse for negative x and y lie in 4th quadrant)
Force = E*q2 = -2.7 N
Angle will be opposite to that of electric field, because of negative sign.
Hence, Angle = 180-17.4 = 162.6 degree anticlockwise from q2-q3
