Question
On Planet X, you drop a 25.0kg stone from rest and measure its speed at various times. Then you use the data you obtained to construct a graph of its speed v as a function of time t.
An astronaut drops a piece of equipment from rest out of the landing module, 3.50m above the surface of Planet X. How long will it take this equipment to reach the ground?
How fast will this equipment be moving when it reaches the ground?
How fast would an astronaut have to project an object straight upward to reach a height of 18.0
Explanation / Answer
Let acceleration due to gravity on planet 'X' be 'k'.
So, v^2 = u^2 + 2as
v^2 = 0 + 2k*3.5
v = sqrt(7k)
v = u + at
sqrt(7k) = kt
t = sqrt(7k)/(k)
Height of object from ground = 18m
Height of object from hand = 18 - 3.5 = 14.5m
v^2 = u^2 + 2as
0 = u'^2 - 2k*14.5
u' = sqrt(29k)
v = u' + at
0 = sqrt(29k) - kt
t = sqrt(29k)/(k)
