Question

The drawings show three charges that have the same magnitude but may have different signs. In all cases the distance d between the charges is the same. The magnitude of the charges is |q|=9.9 ?C, and the distance between them is d=4.0 mm. Determine the magnitude of the net force on charge 2 for each of the three drawings.

The magnitude of the charges is |q|=9.9 ?C, and the distance between them is d=4.0 mm. Determine the magnitude of the net force on charge 2 for each of the three drawings.

Explanation / Answer

a) magnitude of net charge = 2*k*q^2 / d^2 = 2 * 9*10^9 * 9.9^2 * 10^-12 / ( 0.004^2 ) = 110261.25 N

b) magnitude of net charge = 0 ( as force fom each +q chage will be zero )

c) magnitude of net charge = root (2) * k*q^2 / d^2   = 77966.4775771 N
