(4) Estimate the radiation yield for 10-MeV electrons in (a) A (b) Fe c) Au (Marks 9) (5) Give the two physical factors for the stopping power of beta particles to be to be different from that of the heavy charged particles. No equation is needed. Provide descriptive answer) (Marks 6) (6) Do beta rays of many radio nuclides have a range greater than the epidermis, unlike alpha particles? What is the range of the 70 keV electron for equivalent minimum thickness of the epidermis? No equation or calculation is needed. Provide answers) (Marks 6)

Explanation / Answer

(5) stopping power :-

it is defined as the energy lost by a particle per unit distance as it travels through the medium .

the energy losses of beta particle is much more complicated than heavy ions.

there are some important differences

1. high seed of beta particles makes it neccessary to employ a relativistic treatment of the collision mechanism.

2. nuclear electrons or beta particle have a continuous distribution in initial energy whereas the heavy particles are mono energetic.

3. beta particles have smaller masses so their path is so irregular.
