Complete the following paragraphs to describe how stoma are opened and closed by the stomatal apparatus. chloroplasts cell walls epidermal cells transpiration potassium water potential epidermis osmosis turgid turgor pressure Stomata, which are small pores found in the epidermis, are responsible for regulating gas exchange and turgor pressure. Surrounding each stoma are two guard cells. These structures have relatively elastic cell walls that are thicknes near the stoma opening. Changes in their turgid determine when the skoma will be opened and closed. Since guard cells contain chloroplasts, they are capable of conducting photosynthesis. First however, they must actively transport potassium ions from adjacent water potential. However, increased ions concentrations, and thus lowered osmosis, leads to an influx of water into the guard cells by turgid. The additional water makes the guard cells epidermal cells, causing the stoma to open. Whwn photosynthesis ceases, the ion concentration declines and water exits the guard cell. As turgor pressure drops, the stoma close.
