Question
PL1. List at least three objects that appear different when you look at them through a polarizer and three that don't seem to significantly change. Make sure it's clear in your response which is which PL2. Describe the effects a polarizer has on the objects that appear to change. What happens when you rotate the polarizer while looking at these types of objects? PL3. Many sunglasses are polarized. Based on what you've already discovered about how polarizers change the way certain types of objects look, determine whether or not your sunglasses are polarized. (Or if you don't have sunglasses, find a friend who does.) Clearly explain your procedure, observations, and analysisExplanation / Answer
1) Three objects that appear different when viewed through a polarizer are the sky, any water body and snow surface. Three objects that do not significantly appear different when viewed through a polarizer are leaves, dark-coloured materials and clothes.
2) The materials of the first set scatter/reflect sunlight and the intensity of such light is reduced as we view them through a polarizer. The materials of the second set do not reflect much of the light falling on them that they do not appear so different when viewed through a polarizer.
3) Look at the sky various through the sunglass at various angles from the ground. The light coming from directly above your head (at right angle from ground) is completely polarised and you should see it black when viewed through the sunglass. If not, rotate the glass till you see it dark (this is because the polarizing angle of the glass may not be aligned to the polarization of the sunlight coming from directly above). At an intermediate angle of viewing the sky, the sky will appear less bright, bring another sunglass and hold it perpendicular to the previous one and view through both of them. The sky will appear darker. If you observe these, then your sunglass is polarized and if there is not much difference when viewed in the different configurations, then it is not polarized.
