NAME MSE 403, Spring 2017, Examination 2 If you performed a strength test on only one sample each of the polycrystalline and single crystal Si described above in 2, how would you expect the fracture stresses to compare and why? (6) c. If you did the same experiment again, but made 100 identical samples each of scratched single and polycrystalline Si, then performed the strength test, how do you expect the two populations to compare and why? (6) d. . You manage to convince your manager to repeat the test from 2d above, but this time takir

Explanation / Answer

a) Other factors affecting the results are,

Vibrations

Illumination

Humidity

b) Hardness of a material is to withstand friction and have abrasion resistance whereas toughness is a property of material to resist fracture. Hence a hard material need not be tough.

c) Polycrystalline Si crystal is made by sintering that is it is made by pressing the powdered crystal into required shape followed by heating in a furnace hence it consists of large number of grain boundaries, these grain boundaries offer resistance to any stress applied on it so it takes longer time for the fracture to propagate whereas in a single crystal there are lesser grain boundaries hence the rate of fracture propagation is faster comparatively.

D) In the population of Polycrystalline Si the fracture propagates slowly due to resistive force offered by grain boundaries, whereas it is faster comparatively due to less resistive force offered by the population.
