The atomic no. of Magnesium is 12 and its electronic configuration is 2,8,2. Since its valence shell has 2 electrons so it has tendency to lose its valence electrons and it does the same i.e losses 2 electrons.
And, any element which losses electrons is a metallic element so magnesium is also considered to be a metal which is highly reactive with a valency of +2.
