Question

A small, 2.4L passenger car engine (SI, no turbo) is being driven casually at 60kph. The Check Engine Light is illuminated. It’s Brake Power Efficiency is known to be about 20% at this roadload condition (consistent with Figure 12-4, at an RPM of 1500). It consumes fuel at a rate of 6.0 kg/hr of the gasoline noted in Heywood D4. Fuel/Air Ratio is 110% of stoichiometric. Indicated results are similar (but not identical) to those in Fig. 15-4. Exhaust gases are discharged at 1000K, with thermodynamic properties noted in Appendix B and D4. Cooling water inlet temperature is 85C, outlet temperature 95C, and coolant (assume water) flow is 1800 kg/hr. The outside air temperature is 30C.

a. The operating Fuel/Air Ratio.

b. The Mass Airflow Rate.

Explanation / Answer

Stociometry F/A ratio 10 1/14.7=0.068

Since it is 110% so F/A is 1.1*0.0680=0.075

Since fuel consumption is 6kg/hr so air required is 6/0.075=80kg/hr
