Question
Thanks for any help!
A J-tube having a uniform cross sectional diameter of 3.00 cm is filled as shown in the figure. The mass on the left arm is symmetrically placed on a frictionless piston that floats on the mercury in the arm on the left. You may neglect the mass of the piston and the mass of gas in the top of the arm on the right. Determine the heights h1 through h4. (The figure is not exactly to scale) If the mercury level is as shown in the figure when the gauge pressure of the gas in the right arm is 98200 Pa, how much mass, M, sits atop the piston on top of the left arm? Show your work on separate pages.Explanation / Answer
a) volume of ethyl alcohol = 300 ml
300 = h4*?*d^2/4 d = diameter of tude = 3 cm
h4 = 42.44 cm
volume of glycerine is = 280
280 = h1*?*d^2/4
h1 = 39.61 cm
b) A = cross section area of tube
M/A = (P due to glycerine)+(P due to water)+(P due to oil)+(P due to ethyl alcohol)+Pga
M/A = (0.396*1260*9.8)+(0.283*1000*9.8)+(0.169*800*9.8)+(0.424*789*9.8)+98200
M = 78.08kg
