Question
A family comes home from a long vacation with laundry to do and showers to take. The water heater has been turned off during vacation. If the water heater has a capacity of 50.9 gallons and a 4970 W heating element, how much time is required to raise the temperature of the water from 18.7oC to 64.3oC? Assume that the heater is well insulated and no water is withdrawn from the tank during this time.
I know that (mass in kg) x 4.186(specific heat of water) x 45.6 (change in temp) but i dont know how to propoerly convert the gallons to kg.
Explanation / Answer
1 gallon=3.78541 lts.
The density of water is 1000kg/m^3.
1m^3=1000lts.
So,density of water is 1kg/ltr.
Now the weight of water is 1kg/ltr*50.9*3.78541lts=192.677kgs
