At a site where the Earth's magnetic field has a magnitude of 0.57 gauss (where 1 gauss = 1.00 times 10-4 T) and points to the north, 68 degree below the horizontal, a high-voltage power line 154 m in length carries a current of 120 A. Determine the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force exerted on this wire, if the orientation of the wire and hence the current is as follows. horizontally toward the south horizontally toward the west

Explanation / Answer

a)

F = i l B sin(theta) = 120*154*0.57e-4*sin(68) = 0.977 N

0 degrees

b)

By = 0.57e-4*cos(68)

Bz = 0.57e-4*sin(68)

Fy = -i l Bz = -120*154*0.57e-4*sin(68) = -0.977 N

Fz = -i l By = -120*154*0.57e-4*cos(68) = -0.395 N

F = sqrt(0.977^2 + 0.395^2) = 1.05 N

direction: arctan(0.395/0.977) = 22.0 degrees
