can answer these questions?

What are the SI units o f linear momentum? True or false? "The momentum and the velocity of an object are vectors, and are always in the same direction as one another." Explain. Why is kinetic energy always positive or zero? You will probably find that even if you are very careful, some kinetic energy will be lost when the carts collide, even when you use the springy bumpers to achieve an elastic collision. But isn't energy always conserved? Explain what happened to the "lost" kinetic energy. (pre -lab continues on next page)

Explanation / Answer

1) kgm/s or kilograms metre per second

2) True. momentum = mass X velocity and its direction is in the same direction as velocity.

3) KE = (0.5)X(m)X(v2) mass cannot be negative and velocity square cannot be negative. That's why KE is always positive or zero. It's zero when either mass = 0 or velocity = 0.

4) Energy is always conserved. The lost KE gets converted into heat energy and sound energy (in case there is a sound when the carts collide)
