Question
Tom and Jerry both push on the3.10 m diameter merry-go-round as shown in the figure.
B. What is the net torque if Jerry reverses the direction that he pushes 180 degrees without changing the magnitude of his force?
Tom and jerry both push on the 3.10 m diameter merry-go-round as shown in the figure. If Tome pushes with a force of 39.7 N and Jerry pushes with a force of 35.5N, what is the net torque on the merry-go-round? What is the net torque if Jerry reverses the direction that he pushes 180 degrees without changing the magnitude of his force?Explanation / Answer
a). net torque = torque given by Tom - torque given by Jerry = [39.7*sin60 - 35.5*sin80]*(3.1/2) = -0.898 N-m -ve sign shows that the torque is clockwise and opposite to the torque given by Tom. b). net torque = torque given by Tom - torque given by Jerry = [39.7*sin60 + 35.5*sin80]*(3.1/2) = 107.48 N-m (anticlockwise)
