Question
Figure shows two unequal point charges Q1 = +4C and Q2 = -2C. The distance between them is 16 cm.
I) Where, in what region could a net E- field due to this combination be 0. Show calculation.
I believe the answer is region I and III but need to verify that claim with calculations.
Keep calculations as simple as possible, but easy to follow :)
II) find the distance, r, from q = -2 C where the net E-field is 0.
PLEASE PROVIDE EXPLANATION. WILL RATE. THANK YOU!!!
Explanation / Answer
negative charge has E towards it and positive charge has E away from it....so in region II the E's add up and they wont be 0
region III
let E=0 be at a distance x from -2c charge then
Q1/(R+x)^2 = Q2/x^2
4/(16+x)^2 =2/x^2
2x^2=256+x^2+32x
x^2-32x-256=0
x= 38.627 cm
