Question

The switch in the circuit is originally close and has been closed for a long time,

a) find the magnitude and direction of the current thru the closed switch

b) find the charge on the capacitor

c)the switch is now opened,  find the magnitude and direction of the current through the resistor between b and e immediately after switch is closed

d)find the displacement current that the capacitor 30 us after than switch has opened

The switch in the circuit is originally close and has been closed for a long time, find the magnitude and direction of the current thru the closed switch find the charge on the capacitor the switch is now opened, find the magnitude and direction of the current through the resistor between b and e immediately after switch is closed find the displacement current that the capacitor 30 us after than switch has opened

Explanation / Answer

a) I= V/r1+r2 (as capacitor is open circuit in steady state that is current through C is 0)

so I= 12/6= 2A from a to b

b) vlotage across C is voltace across 4 ohm so Vc= 4*2= 8V

so Q=CV= 3*8=24 Columb

c) now capacitor will act as voltage source of 8V hence

I through 4 ohm is 8/4= 2A (from b to e)

d) I through capacitor can be given by I0e^-t/RC

where I0= 2A and RC= 12 us-1

so I(30us)= 2*e^-(30/12)= 0.164 A which is the displacement current
