Question
Just need A and B. Thanks!
In the figure below(Figure 1), the top left capacitor and top right capacitor has 2.3/ mu F, the middle capacitor has 3.7/muF, and the bottom capacitor has 7.1/mu F, and the voltage across ab is 49V . Part A Calculate the charge on each capacitor. Enter your answer as four numbers correspoding to the four charges, separated with commas. Give in the order Ctop left, Ctop right, Cmiddle, Cbottom Calculate the potential difference across each capacitor. Enter your answer as four numbers corresponding to four potential differencies, separated with commas. Give in the order Ctop left, Ctop right, Cmiddle, CbottomExplanation / Answer
Total capacitance = Ct
Capacitance topleft=C1
Capacitance topright=C2
Capacitance middle=C3
Capacitance bottom=C4
Part A........................................................................................................................
C1 & C2 are in series. Their effective capacitance = (C1*C2)/(C1+C2)
C12 = (2.3*2.3)/(2.3+2.3)
C12 = 1.15 uF
C12 is in parallel with C3
Hence C123 = C12 + C3
C123 = 1.15 + 3.7
C123 = 4.85 uF
C123 is in series with C4
C1234 = (C123*C4)/(C123+C4)
C1234=(4.85*7.1)/(4.85+7.1)
C1234= 2.881 uF
Ct =total capacitnace= C1234 = 2.881 uF
Total voltage = Vt = 49 V
Total charge = Qt = Ct * Vt =49 * 2.881 = 141.197 uColoumb
Charge across C4 = Q4 = total charge = 141.197 uColoumb
Now, C4 and combination of C1, C2 C3 are in series.
Charge across C3 = Q3= (141.197 * 1.15) / (3.7 + 1.15) = 33.48 uColoumb
Total charge across combination of capacitor C1 and C2 = (141.197 * 3.7) / (4.85) = 107.72 uColoumb
Since C1 and C2 are in series charge across them would be equal and equal to charge across their combination.
Hence Q1 = Q2 = 107.72 uColoumb
Part B...................................................................................................................
Volatge across C4 = Q4/C4 = 141.197 / 7.1 = 19.88 V
Volatge across C3 = Q3/C3 = 33.47 / 3.7 = 9.04 V
Volatge across C2 = Q2/C2 = 107.72 / 2.3 = 46.83 V
Volatge across C1 = Q1/C1 = 107.72 / 2.3 = 46.83 V
