Question
Fill in the blank:
(a) Friction welding occurs when you slide one metal/alloy over another piece of metal/alloy with enough force to cause heating or large stresses. If both pieces of metal/alloy are the same, this would be an example of _______________________ . If two pieces of metal/alloy were different, this would be an example of _____________________.
(b) Ceramic materials are often used as thermal and oxidative barrier coatings on a metal turbine blades. To prevent oxidation, would you want the ceramic coating to be large grained or fine (small) grained? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
For first blank it would be friction welding. If metals are different then Diffusion welding.i.e.in second blank fill diffusion welding. ceramic coating is fine grained which is sprayed by plasma spray.if grain size will be large more irregularties there for oxidation.so to avoid exposure of blade material into gaseous surrounding very small grain size ceramic coating is preffered.
