Question

The two basic types of project selection models are numeric and non-numeric. The type of model used is based on the decision makers involved and information available. It is important to note that models do not make decisions. People do! You need to make a decision on which project your team will engage in over the next 16 weeks. To arrive at a decision requires some level of negotiation. The negotiating process should bring all parties to a healthy resolution where each person feels satisfied with the final agreement. What do you think are the keys to a successful negotiation between team members, project sponsor, instructor and users of the system you are going to develop or integrate?

Explanation / Answer

The qualities required for successful negotiation are the same qualities that undermine success.

The project organization chart establishes the formal relationships among project manager, the project team members, the development organization, the project, beneficiaries and other project stakeholders. This organization must facilitate an effective interaction and integration among all the major project participants and achieve open and effective communication among them.

Members of complex teams are less likely to share knowledge freely, to learn from one another, to shift workloads flexibly to break up unexpected bottlenecks, to help one another complete jobs and meet deadlines, and to share resources. They are less likely to say that they “sink or swim” together, want one another to succeed, or view their goals as compatible.
