Question

A) What is the magnitude of the net gravitational force due to these objects on a third uniform sphere with mass 0.450kg placed at the point x= 4.00m, y = 0?

B) What is the direction of the net gravitational force due to these objects on a third uniform sphere with mass 0.450

kg placed at the point x= 4.00m, y = 0?

C) Where, other than infinitely far away, could the third sphere be placed such that the net gravitational force acting on it from the other two spheres is equal to zero?Where, other than infinitely far away, could the third sphere be placed such that the net gravitational force acting on it from the other two spheres is equal to zero?

Explanation / Answer

force due to sphere at origin:

F1 = G*61*.45/4^2 = 1.14 *10^-10 N

force due to spehere at y axis:

F2 = G*76*.45/(4^2 + 3^2) = 9.12 *10^-10 N

angle between F1 and F2 from the triangle formed can be easily seen i.e. 45 degree, as 3,4,5 will be a right triangle.

now resultant force:

F^2 = F1^2 + F2^2 + 2*F1*F2*cos45

F = 9.95 *10^-10 N

two get point of zero force third sphere can be placed at a point in between two sphere at y axis to get location do:

G*61*.45/x^2 = G*76*.45/(3 - x)^2

2.86 - .89x = x

x = 1.42 from origin on y axis
