An air conditioner connected to a 120 V rms ac line is equivalent to a 13.7 ? resistance and a 1.90 ? inductive reactance in series. Calculate (a) the impedance of the air conditioner and (b) the average rate at which energy is supplied to the appliance.

Explanation / Answer

Impedance = sqrt(R^2 + X^2)

= sqrt(13.7^2 + 1.9 ^2)

= 13.83 ohm

Power = V^2/Z

           = 120*120*2 / 13.83

           = 2982.43 Watt
