a) Calculate the buoyant force due to the surrounding water on a solid piece of iron weighing 1310 N in air.



The buoyant force is just the weight (force) of the displaced water.

F = ma

Assume a = g = 9.81

The iron weighs (has force of) 1310 N, so it's mass = 1310/9.81 = 133.5 kg



Density of iron = 7870 kg/m^3 (Wikipedia)

Volume of the piece of iron = 133.6/7870 = 0.017 m^3



Density of water = 1000 kg/m^3

Buoyant force = mg = 0.017 * 1000 * 9.81 = 166.8 N

The substance has mass m = 8.2996/9.81 = 0.8460 kg (in air)

The substance has mass m = 0.8031 kg (in water)



The displaced water has mass of 0.8460 - 0.8031 = 0.0429 kg



Specific gravity = 0.8460/0.0429 = 19.72
