Question

Three positive point charges, all with the same charge q, are arranged in a triangle as shown below. Coordinates have been chosen so that one charge is on the positive y axis, and the other two are on the x axis, equidistant from the origin. Point P is on the negative y axis, as shown in the figure. (There is no charge located at P; the dot just marks a position.) Draw an arrow on the picture below to indicate the direction of the electric field at P. Explain how you found this direction.

The same three positive point charges are shown below. Is there any location (other than infinitely far away) where the electric field due to these three charges is 0? If there is, mark the approximate location on the picture below using a large dot (

Explanation / Answer

a) the electric field is in downward direction as resultant of the fields of the charges on the x-axis is in downward direction and that of charge on y axis is also in downward direction.

b) electric field will be zero in between origin and the charge on y axis. as at this point resultant of electric fields of the charges on x-axis is in upward direction and that of charge on y-axis in in downward direction.

c) there is no point except of infinity where potential is zero as all the charges used are of same sign.
