Question

A positive charge is located at the center of a cube. a) are the intersections of the field lines with a side of the box uniformly distributed across that side? b) We can consider the left side of the box as composed of many small surface elements of equal area. i. Is the number of field lines through surface element A (a square at the center of the cube) greater than, less than, or equal to the number of field lines through surface element B ( a square at the edged of the cube? Explain ii Is the flux through surface element A >, <, or = to the flux through surface element B? Explain

Explanation / Answer

(a) Field Lines are not distributed Uniforemly along a side of the box, they are more closser at the nearest Perpendicular distance and viceversa.

The Field lines and hence the flx will be equal(=) on both Sides , Because of the Gauss Law the Charge in the imaginary surface will be equal due to symmetry
