Question
You are standing on the observation deck of the empire state building ( 330m above the ground) when superwoman flies by headed straight for the ground. Superwoman is flying vertically down because she wants to get a hot dog from the street vendor below. Her speed is a constant speed 35 m/s. At the instant in time she descends past you, you are startled and drop your camera over the edge of the observation deck. The camera freefalls at the accepted value for acceleration near the earth's surface. At some height above the ground your camera catches up to superwoman (and would pass her if not grabbed by superwoman). You will be doing the calculations in this problems two fold, but using a different location for the origin and different direction for the positive x-axis each time. This will require careful consideration of the +/- aspects of vector quantities. 1.Calculate the height above the ground at which superwoman and camera meet. 2.Calculate the velocity the camera has when they meet. 3.What is superwoman's speed when they meet? 4. What is the superwoman's velocity when they meet? 5. calculate the time at which they meet. 6.calculate the height above the ground at which Superwoman and camera meet. I've tried just integrating the freefall which would be just -4.9x^2, which would make everything easy to solve, but there is a constant added to the integration.Explanation / Answer
d = 35* t d = 0.5*9.8*t^2 t = 2.67 sec d = 93.5 m 1) height from ground = 330-93.5 =236.4 m 2)26.166 m/s 3)35 m/s 4)35 m/s 5)2.67 sec 6)236.4 m
