Question

You are standing on a sheet of ice that covers the football stadium parking lot in Buffalo; there is negligible friction between your feet and the ice. A friend throws you a 0.415 kg ball that is traveling horizontally at 11.0 m/s . Your mass is 65.0 kg .

A) If you catch the ball, with what speed do you and the ball move afterwards?

B)If the ball hits you and bounces off your chest, so that afterwards it is moving horizontally at 8.30 m/sin the opposite direction, what is your speed after the collision?

Explanation / Answer

part a

initial momentum of the ball p1 = mball*v = 0.415*11 = 4.565 kg-m/s

query is If you catch the ball, with what speed do you and the ball move afterwards

now let the combined velocity afterwards be v1

therefore final momentum will be p2 = (mball + mplayer)*v1 = 65.415* v1

now applying law of conservation of momentum

65.415* v1 = 4.565

v1 = 0.0697 m/s

part b

If the ball hits you and bounces off your chest, so that afterwards it is moving horizontally at 8.30 m/sin the opposite direction,

let this time velocity of the player be v2

final momentum in this case will be p3 = 65*v2 - 0.415*8.3

again applying law of conservation of momentum

p3 = p1

65*v2 - 3.4445 = 4.565

65 * v2 = 8.0095

v2 = 0.12322 m/s
