So.. I had lab today and there was a question about how to charge an electroscope. I said that you can charge an electroscope either by contact or by induction. When you charge the electroscope by contact. You simply, have a charged object (let's say a negatively charged plastic rod that was rubbed with special material) and then touch the electroscope with it. This would just transfer the electrons from the plastic rod to the electroscope and there just be an excess negative charge on the electroscope. Now .. for induction.. which I am not too sure how this process works. I said.. you can place, let's say a positively charged rod NEAR (not touching) the conducting plate of the electroscope to polarize the charges throughout the system. The electrons would be more attracted to plate while the positive charges are more concentrated in the leaves of the electroscope. While the system is polarized this way, you can touch the plate with your finger and the ELECTRONS will transfer over to your body. Then you can let go of the electroscope and move the charged rod away from it also and all that will be left is a positive charge on the electroscope. Not exactly sure if thats right. Maybe electrons from your body saturate the electroscope and leave the electroscope with a net negative charge? Someone please help me.Explanation / Answer
