Three part question. 1. Draw a force diagram (free body diagram) for the train's engine as it accelerates forward. 2. Draw a force diagram (free body diagram) for the train it pulls by the engine 3. By Newton's 3rd Law, the train pulls backward on it's engine exactly as hard as the engine pulls forward on the train. Since the 3rd law is correct the train should go anywhere. Using the diagrams explain why this analysis is wrong. The first two parts I believe I drew it correctly. For the engine I drew the force of gravity downwards, normal force upwards, force of engine going in the positive x-direction, and force of train going in the negative x-direction. The train was pretty much the same...but I can't seem to find an explanation on why the the train wouldn't stay still..could anyone give me a hint?Explanation / Answer
it is all a game of how u represent the "force of engine". The engine produces a torque at the axle of the wheels the wheel tend to rotate. but since they are on the track, the track provides a frictional force in the forward direction which propels the engine forward.
