What are the main differences between a living organism (like the one that you observed in the wild) and a stone artifact (like the hand axes (Acheulean bifaces) that Doc Johnson showed you in class)? Be sure to consider the unifying themes of biology such as Cell Theory, the hierarchical organization of life, the nature of genes, the functions of DNA, the processes of heredity, the theory of Deep Time, the Geologic Time sclae as well as the conceptual frame work of Earth-Life History, the Tree of Life.Explanation / Answer
The differences between a living organism ,lets say a frog, and a stone artifact (Acheulean handaxes) will be as following
The very basic difference is that living organisms can give rise to another living organism, they multiply but a stone artifact cannot.
based on the cell theory. it says cell is the basic and functional unit of life which is capable of reproduction..so a living organism follows cell theory since it is made up of cells and can reproduce too on the other hand an artifact do not follow the cell theory.
Hierarchial organisation of life is the describes different levels at which multicellular lifeforms have been organized for their proper understanding and study. living organisms have hierarchy of life while non livings dont have.
Genes are present in living organisms which carry the genetic information from parent to the offspring while non livings donot have genes.
geological time scale describes how life forms since the beginning of earth have changed from time to time. This is also applicable for living organisms only but the artifacts have also changed with time as when the knowledge and experience increased with time.
