Question

In the figure, M2 has more mass than M1 and M1 has more mass than M3. The questions refer to the magnitudes of tensions and weights.

There is friction between the horizontal plane and M2 (?k ? 0). M2 is observed to travel at a constant speed. Assume that the pulleys are frictionless and have negligible mass. Select the appropriate statements to complete the following sentences.

The magnitude of the net force on M2 is T2 - T3.

T2 is ... T1.

T4 is ... M3g

T1 is ... M1g.

M1 accelerates downwards.

T2 is ... T3.

Explanation / Answer

There is friction between the horizontal plane and M2 (k 0).
T2 is ... T3. If I'm imagining things right(and I think I am)....

1) if m2 is moving at a constant speed all of the masses are moving at a constant speed. ie a = 0 . The extra force generated by mass 1 exactly counter acts the frictional force. The net force on mass 2 is 0.

2) T2 equals T1 because there is no friction in the pulley and the change in direction has no effect on the tension.

3) M1 is moving at constant speed, therefor Fnet = 0 therefore M1g equals T1
4) Same thing as above.
5) false, there is the force of friction also.
6) greater than, because T2 = T3 + Ffriction , Again, since a=0, Fnet = 0
