Question
I had a question that said "Starting from a pillar, you run a distance 200m east (the x-direction) at an average speed of 5.0s , and then run a distance 280m west at an average speed of 4.0s to a post" It said to find the average velocity from pillar to post. The time from Pillar to east is 200/5 = 40s, and the time back to post is 280/4 = 70s I was thinking you had to do something like Vave of 1 - Vave of 2. Vave = X2-X1/T2-T1. However when I saw the solution it was 200-280 / 40+70 Why is the 200 subtracted by the 280 and the times are added together.Explanation / Answer
here what is average velocity means Vavg = Total distance / Total time total distance means here he travelled 280m and returened back in same direction so distance is difference between them and time is total time i.e t1+t2
