Question

A large aquarium is filled to the rim with water. This full aquarium has a total mass of 400 kg. A 15 kg block of wood (density = 770 kg/m3) is placed in the surface of the water, where it floats. When this is done, some of the water spills over the edges of the aquarium and is lost, but when everything is steady again, the water level in the aquarium is at the same level as it was before the wood block was put in. If you put the aquarium, with water and wood block, on a scale (taking care not spill any more water), what mass would you find? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

you would find the final mass to be same as the initial mass of total water. weight of the wood block = weight of the water displaced. so, total weight is same as initial.
