Question
A fisherman notices that his boat is moving up and down periodically, owing to waves on the surface of the water. It takes 2.50 for the boat to travel from its highest point to its lowest, a total distance of 0.700 . The fisherman sees that the wave crests are spaced 6.00 apart. A) How fast are the waves traveling? (velocity in m/s) B) What is the amplitude of each wave? (Amplitude in m) If the total vertical distance traveled by the boat were 0.400 m/s, but the other date remained the same, C) How fast are the waves traveling? (in m/s) D) What is the amplitude of each wave? (in m) thank you!Explanation / Answer
a) wave velocity is = v= f
f= 1/T , T=2*2.5= 5sec, = 6 m
v=6/5= 1.2 m/s
b)A= (total distance/2)
=0.7/2=0.35m
c)as v= f which does not depend on amplitude
f= 1/T , T=2*2.5= 5sec, = 6 m
v=6/5= 1.2 m/s
it remains same which is 1.2 m/s
d) A= (total verical distance/2)= 0.4/2= 0.2m
