Question
An x-ray beam with wavelength 0.160 nm is directed at a crystal. As the angle of incidence increases, you observe the first strong interference maximum at an angle 68.5 degrees. What is the spacing (d) between the planes of the crystal? Express your answer in nanometers to four significant figures.

Part B Find the angle theta_2 at which you will find a second maximum. Express your answer in degrees to three significant figures.
Explanation / Answer
sol. This is just basic Bragg diffraction. Use the standard equation: n x lambda = 2d x sin(theta) 1) For the 1st strong max, n = 1, lambda -= 0.160nm = 0.160x10^-9m, theta equals 68.5deg, Just put the numbers in the equation and find d (in metres). 2) To find theta_2, use the same formula but n=2, d= previous answer, lambda is same as part 1.
