Question

The Bouncing Ball

1.    In what ways does your everyday life involve science??

2.    By what criteria might you determine whether a question might be answered using the scientific method?

3.    Identify a current piece of legislation relating to science or technology (perhaps an environmental science or energy bill). How did your representatives in Congress vote on this issue? Did they use scientific knowledge or receive wisdom to arrive at their decision?

4.    Which, if any, of the following objects does not exert a gravitational force on you?

o   this book

o   the Sun

o   the nearest star

o   a distant galaxy

o   the Atlantic ocean

5.    In what sense is the Newtonian universe simpler than Ptolemy%u2019s? Suppose observations had shown that the two did equally well at explaining the data. Construct an argument to say that Newton%u2019s universe should still be preferred.

6.    How much force are you exerting when you lift a 50-pound dumbbell? What units will you use to describe this force?

7.    How does gravity affect the flow of blood in your body? The flow of sap in trees? How have organisms evolved to counteract the force of gravity?

8.    How does a sundial work? How would you build a sundial differently in Canada from one in Mexico?

Explanation / Answer

1-Almost every material I come into contact with from my clothes to my house was in one way or another created with the use of science. Cooking and measuring is related to science. And, trying to create a new recipe may be akin to an experiment. Whenever I go to the grocery store, I'm always trying to convert prices to common units to figure out which item is the most expensive which is more of general math as science. Acids and Bases make excellent cleaners, and common ones include Vinegar, Ammonia, Muratic Acid, Lye, Baking Soda, and etc. A basic understanding of science is good to know when using these compounds. NOTE, NEVER MIX AMMONIA AND BLEACH. I work with computers, programming, and computer science on a daily basis. A basic understanding of electricity and electrical components is useful for building and maintaining numerous electronic devices and systems, although so much today is now modular. But, for example, understanding the difference between serial and parallel batteries can be useful. 2- science cannot answer this question at this time but that does not mean it is subjective. There are cases in which this is subjective (e.g. when God is defined as an idea as opposed to a non-mental entity) but there are also cases in which this is objective (e.g. when God is defined as Lord Zeus, a celestial entity physically extant and sitting upon the top of Mount Olympus.) The reason the scientific method cannot answer this question is that in the absence of any conclusive empirical evidence (either via experience or experiment) science cannot say anything conclusive about a topic. Using the scientific method it is usually quite hard to say anything about 'hidden' entities which our senses and tools cannot interact with. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. 4-Absolutely ALL objects does this. Large objects, much force. Small objects, little force. Black holes, Humoungus force. 6-Any force that is more than 50 pounds will lift a 50-pound object. The greater the force is, the faster it will lift the object. 8-We have days and nights on earth due to the Earth rotating around axis. Approximately over 23.6 hours our Earth makes one complete rotation and as we rotate, we rotate away from the sun (night) and back towards it (day). A sundial works by gauging the suns position in the sky relative to where we are in that 24 hour period. The sun casts shadows on the sundial in different places as it moves across our sky, indicating different times. The time piece on the sundial is called a "gnomon" and by reading where the shadow falls when the sun hits the gnomon we can estimate the time of day.
