You will need two equations to solve this problem which I know you are aware of: m1*v1i + m2*v2i = m1*v1f + m2*v2f [conservation of momentum] the other is kinetic energy but to make it easy on you.. the equation will reduce down to: v1i - v2i = v2f - v1f Simultaneously solve those two equations for v1f and v2f and you if you get a negative then you know it's to the left.
