Question

Awar-wolf, ortrebuchet, is a device used during the Middle Ages to throw rocks at castles and now sometimes used to fling pumpkins and pianos. A simple trebuchet is shown in the figure below. Model it as a stiff rod of negligible mass 3.00 m long and joining particles of massm1= 0.120 kgandm2=48.5kgat its ends. It can turn on a frictionless horizontal axle perpendicular to the rod and16.0cm from the particle of larger mass. The rod is released from rest in a horizontal orientation. Find the maximum speed that the object of smaller mass attains.(My apologies, I didn't understand the rating, I really thought it was Spam)
m/s

Explanation / Answer

16 cm = 0.16 m [have to use consistent units] Don't have to worry about the mass of the rod because it's given as negligible and don't have to worry about friction because the axle is given as frictionless Let the resultant force on the lighter mass = F and using g = 9.8 m/s² So 48.5 x 9.8 x 0.16 - 0.120 x 9.8 x (3.0 - 0.16) = F(3.0 - 0.16) F = 25.60 N Now I'm assuming the lighter mass is in circular motion while it's being accelerated So F = mv²/r v² = Fr / m v = v(Fr / m) v = v(25.6 x (3.0 - 0.16) / 0.120) v = 24.614m/s So the max speed the lighter mass attains is 25 m/s (to 2 sig figs) Seems reasonable ... hope it's right
